YawCam uses your webcam for different purposes. It can capture images and send them in many different ways. In addition, it can also be used for basic surveillance tasks, as it supports motion detection. A difficulty you may face while installing this app is that it requires Java Runtime Environment to run on your computer, so if you have not installed a Java virtual machine, you will need to do so.

The application has a straightforward yet not attractive interface. In addition to the preview or capture windows, from which you can monitor what the camera is presently taking, the program has a main window, with two tabs. The first of these tabs, labeled as Control Panel, allows you to enable the various types of output and services, while the second, labeled as Console, works as log in which all the operations and program messages are kept. Moreover, there is a menu allowing you to pick one of the available cameras, including local or IP cams, as well as configuring other parameters.

The captured images can be stored as standard picture files in a given location. Likewise, they can be sent to a selected FTP or HTPP server. Finally, it also allows streaming video using an IP address and you can also configure the corresponding web page. As an additional feature, you can merge the captured images into a selected movie file.

In general, YawCam is a useful application. Fortunately, it does not require special skills to perform the most basic operations of taking pictures. However, in order to stream video via IP, users will probably need at least basic knowledge about IP connections and the like.
